Fifty denier is the boundary. Knitted on the semi-opaque block it keeps a slight translucency at the shin that the opaque line at the same number does not have.

Above this the denier number stops describing transparency and starts describing weight.

At 50D the knit is denser than a sheer and resists snagging better, but higher denier resists snagging better. no tights are snag-proof.
